Itoman Great Tug-of-War 2025
In Okinawa, tug-of-war events are held across various regions from the old lunar June to August (roughly July to September in the Gregorian calendar). Okinawa’s tug-of-war is distinctive for linking the loops at the ends of two ropes—male and female ropes—using a metal rod called “Kanachi,” with teams divided into the east male rope and the west female rope. Some matches involve fierce clashes known as “fighting ropes.”
Originally a rural ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest, good fishing, warding off evil, and rain, the contest’s result is believed to predict fortune or misfortune. Frequency varies by region, ranging from once a year to twice a year.
