Noboribetsu Hell Festival Overview
The Noboribetsu Hell Festival, held every year on the last Saturday and Sunday of August, is based on the legend that on these days, the lid of the Hell’s Cauldron at the Jigokudani (Hell Valley) in Noboribetsu Onsen opens, and Enma Daio (King Enma), accompanied by a group of demons, visits Noboribetsu Onsen. The festival features Noboribetsu drums, a demon palanquin carried by students from Noboribetsu Municipal Noboribetsu Junior High School, demon dances, and more.
On this special day of the Hell Festival, Enma Daio parades through the Pleasure Street of the hot spring town, making it a must-see event.
