Kanmon Straits Fireworks Festival 2024

The Kanmon Kaikyo Fireworks Festival (関門海峡花火大会) is a fireworks festival held on both shores of the Kanmon Strait, between Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Moji Ward in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

 

Originally initiated as a local event in Shimonoseki in 1985 by the town development group “Shimonoseki 21st Century Association,” the festival became a joint event in 1988 under the name “Asia Port Festival in KANMON.” The festival marks the anniversary of the 100th year of the port and railway in the Kanmon region.

 

The unique aspect of this festival is that it is jointly held on both sides of the Kanmon Strait, crossing the prefectural border between Yamaguchi and Fukuoka. It is the only fireworks festival in Japan held with the same name on both sides of a strait. While the organizing entities are separate for Shimonoseki and Moji (thus, the admission tickets are not interchangeable), the fireworks are launched separately on each side, but the timing is synchronized to create a cohesive and harmonized display. The opening ceremony alternates between Moji and Shimonoseki, with the odd-numbered years hosted by Moji and the even-numbered years by Shimonoseki, bringing together participants from both sides.
