Kanto’s No.1 Gion Festival – Kumagaya Uchiwa Festival 2025
The Uchiwa Festival is the annual festival of the Yasaka Shrine located in the area. The Yasaka Shrine was originally enshrined during the Bunroku period (starting 1592) as a branch of the Kyoto Yasaka Shrine and was later merged with the Atago Shrine in Kamakura Town.
The earliest record of the Kumagaya summer festival dates back to Kan’en 3 (1750) in the mid-Edo period, which was a petition to unify the festivals held separately by temples and shrines into a single town festival. After receiving official permission, it became a town-wide festival and evolved into its current form.
