Sanja Festival 2026
The Sanja Festival was once divided into three events: the Kannon Festival, the Boat Festival, and the Jigen-e ritual. Since 1872, however, it began being held on May 17 and 18. Today, it takes place on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the third week of May. Its name originates from Asakusa Shrine’s former names, “Sanja Gongen Shrine” or “Sanja Myojin Shrine,” named after the three deities enshrined there — Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari, and Hajino Nakatomo. The official name is “Asakusa Shrine Grand Festival.” The traditional dengaku performance “Binzasara-mai,” dedicated during the festival, is famous for preserving ancient styles and is said to date back to the Muromachi period.
