Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival 2026
During the Little New Year, a ritual known as Dondo-yaki, in which New Year decorations are burned, has been held across Japan since at least the Heian period. In the Shinshu region, it is still widely practiced today—called Sankuro in the Matsumoto area and Onbe in southern Shinshu, where it is even held in city centers. The Dosojin Festival of Nozawa Onsen is one such event, but it is especially famous for its grand scale. It is counted as one of Japan’s Three Great Fire Festivals and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Fire festivals are rare outside Japan, and this Dosojin Festival is extremely popular with international visitors; many foreign skiers staying in Hakuba come by bus to watch it.
