Omizutori 2026

Omizutori is a ritual that forms part of the Shunie Buddhist service held at Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple. It came to be known by this name because water is drawn from the Akaiya well late at night on March 12. The purpose of the ritual is repentance—confessing one’s sins before the Buddha. As of 2020, the ceremony is conducted from March 1 to 14 each year. During this period, purified monks known as Rengyoshu chant sacred names before the Eleven-Faced Kannon, perform rigorous ascetic practices as acts of repentance, and pray for peace and stability throughout the world.
Omizutori itself is only one part of the overall observance. Since it was originally held in the second month of the lunar calendar, the service is called Shunie, though its formal name is the Eleven-Faced Repentance Rite.
