The Tenjin Festival2026
The Tenjin Festival is a celebration held at Tenmangu (Tenjin) shrines throughout Japan. It is associated with the memorial day of the enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane, and is typically held around the 25th of the month. In some months, such as January’s Hatsu-Tenjin, the festival is celebrated on a particularly large scale.
Among all Tenjin festivals nationwide, the most famous is the Tenjin Festival held in Osaka City, centered around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. The following description refers specifically to the Osaka Tenjin Festival. It is one of Japan’s Three Great Festivals (alongside Kyoto’s Gion Festival and Tokyo’s Kanda Festival) and is also one of Osaka’s Three Major Summer Festivals, together with the Ikutama Festival at Ikukunitama Shrine and the Sumiyoshi Festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha. Various events are held over a period of about one month, from an auspicious day in late June through July 25.
