Tenno Matsuri 2024

The Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival (Owari Tsushima Tenno Matsuri) is a festival of the Tsushima Shrine, which is celebrated in Tsushima City and Aisai City in Aichi Prefecture. It is mentioned as the “Tsushima Festival” in the Tokaido Meisho Zue (Famous Places on the Tokaido) from the late Edo period.

 

Overview

The festival involves various events, rituals, and ceremonies over several months, with the climax being the “Yoi Matsuri” (Evening Festival) on the fourth Saturday of July and the following day’s “Asa Matsuri” (Morning Festival) (originally held on the 14th and 15th days of the old calendar). These events, known as the “Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival’s Kurumaguruma Gyogi,” are designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. On December 1, 2016, the “Mountain, Floats, and Carriage Procession Events” were registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it one of Japan’s three major river festivals alongside the Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka and the Kangen-sai at Itsukushima Shrine.
