Okazaki Fireworks Festival 2024

The “Okazaki Castle Town Ieyasu Summer Festival Fireworks Display” is an annual fireworks event held in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, on the first Saturday of August.

 

Overview:

Okazaki City has been known as the home of Mikawa fireworks since the Edo period, and it continues to host traditional fireworks festivals. The Sugeo River (Otogawa) has a history of fireworks offerings during the Sugeo Shrine festival since the culture and Bunsei eras of the Edo period. In 1818 (Bunsei 1), a fireworks display for the lord’s inspection took place, with various towns in the castle town, including Sugeocho, launching their own fireworks.

For details, refer to “Sugeo Shrine (Okazaki City).” To promote tourism, a joint fireworks display between the city and the shrine began after World War II.

The current event takes place along the banks of the Otogawa and Yahagawa rivers, which flow through the central part of Okazaki City. Two floats, “Ten’omaru” and “Sugeomaru,” are anchored downstream of Tono Bridge, and fireworks are launched with Okazaki Castle in the background. Grandstand seating is set up along the Otogawa riverbank, allowing spectators to enjoy the fireworks up close (grandstand seats are available for a fee and are assigned through a lottery). While the Yahagawa riverbank is smaller compared to the Otogawa, it provides a unique opportunity to see 10-inch (1-shaku) shells up close.

The fireworks typically start around 18:50 and conclude around 21:00. The event is held in light rain, and in the case of stormy weather, it is postponed to the following day.
