Notojima Koda Fire Festival (Kouda no Himatsuri) 2024
能登島向田の火祭り(Kouda no Hi Matsuri) is a summer festival held at Iyahime Shrine in Mukouda-machi, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It takes place annually on the last Saturday of July, and in 2023, it was held on July 29th (Saturday).
This festival is considered one of the three major fire festivals in Japan. Men carry dedicated lanterns and throw hand torches at a 30-meter-tall bonfire. The direction in which the fallen torches point is believed to predict a bountiful harvest and prosperity for the year.
According to the festival’s legend, Iyahiko-no-kami, the male deity who created the Echigo Province, visits this area to enjoy an annual rendezvous with the female deity, Iyahime-no-kami, symbolizing the festival.
The event takes place at Sakiyama Hiroba in Mukouda-machi, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and the scheduled time is from 19:30 to around 23:00. If using public transportation, you can take a bus from JR Wakura Onsen Station for about 20 minutes, with the bus stop being “Mukouda Miya-no-mae.” If driving, it’s approximately 60 km or a one-hour drive via the Hokuriku Expressway, Kanazawa-higashi IC, and the Soto-yama Sea Road. There is parking available for 100 cars, and it’s free of charge.
