Seihakusai 2024
青柏祭 (Seihakusai) is an annual grand festival held at Daichinushi Shrine (also known as Sanno Shrine) in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, from May 1st to May 5th. It is the largest spring festival in Noto and one of the Noto Four Great Festivals, dedicated to praying for a rich harvest.
The festival derives its name from the ritual of offering divine food on blue cypress leaves. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the country, in 2016, it was also registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The central attraction of the festival is the “Dekayama,” a massive float with a height of 12 meters, weight of 20 tons, and 2-meter diameter wheels, making it the largest in Japan. Each float is dedicated by different districts – Kanamecho, Fuchucho, and Uomachi – and pulled through the town. The upper level features reproductions of scenes from kabuki, and the dynamic direction change called “Tsujimawashi” is a highlight.
The 2024 Seihakusai is scheduled to take place from May 3rd (Wednesday, holiday) to May 5th (Friday, holiday).
