Nachi Fire Festival 2024
The Nachi Fire Festival (Nachi no Ōgi Matsuri) is the annual grand festival of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, located in Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture. It is held on July 14th each year and is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Fire Festivals.
This festival is a sacred ritual where the deities of Kumano return to the Nachi Falls, refreshing their divine power. In commemoration of the enshrinement and relocation of the deities, the festival prays for the growth and prosperity of all things.
The highlight of the festival is the ritual performed in front of Nachi Falls. Men dressed in white robes carry large burning torches, shouting “Hariya, Hariya” as they descend and ascend the stone steps. The flames from the torches, each weighing over 50 kg, dance wildly along the approach.
The festival begins at 10:00 AM, with the climax, the “Gokuraku Iki” (Sacred Fire Ritual), taking place around 2:00 PM.
Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Wakayama Prefecture in 1960, the festival is a significant cultural heritage. Additionally, the agricultural dance (Nachi no Nōgaku) offered during the main festival was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1976.
