Aizen Festival (Aizen Matsuri)

The Aizen Festival, known as Aizen Matsuri, is an annual event held at Aizen Do, officially called Shomanzan Aizendo Shoso-in, a sub-temple of the Shingon sect’s headquarters, Shitenno-ji Temple. Located in Osaka’s Tennoji Ward, the festival takes place from June 30 to July 2. It is one of the three major summer festivals in Osaka, alongside the Tenjin Festival and the Sumiyoshi Festival, and is organized by a Buddhist temple, adding a unique religious aspect to the festivities.

• The Aizen Festival is part of the trio of major summer festivals in Osaka, known colloquially as “Aizen-san,” “Tenjin-san,” and “Sumiyoshi-san.” These festivals are humorously associated with the phrase “Aisumasen,” derived from “Aisu (Aizen) – Sumi (Sumiyoshi) – Masen (Tenjin),” suggesting that the summer festivities in Osaka begin with Aizen-san and conclude with Sumiyoshi-san.
• Aizen Do is dedicated to Aizen Myo-o, a deity associated with love and attraction, making the festival distinct with its focus on Buddhist religious traditions alongside celebratory events.
