Ikutama Festival: Celebrating Tradition and History in Osaka

The Ikutama Festival is an annual celebration held at the Ikukunitama Shrine in Osaka’s Tennoji Ward. Taking place from July 11th to 12th, it is recognized as one of Osaka’s three major summer festivals and is renowned as the oldest festival of its kind at the city’s oldest shrine.

The highlight of the festival is the procession on the second day (July 12th), known as the “Hongu-sai,” featuring the sacred portable shrine called “Gohoren.” Approximately 500 participants, dressed in festival attire, including shrine maidens and people on decorated carriages, make their way to the former enshrined location at Osaka Castle. On both days, there will also be traditional performances such as “oneri” (rotating drums and floats) within the shrine grounds.

The Ikukunitama Shrine, affectionately known as “Ikutama-san,” has a rich history dating back approximately 2,700 years, making it the oldest shrine in Osaka. The primary deity, Ikushima-Ashima Okami, is revered as the “Yaso-no-Kami” (Deity of Eighty Islands), associated with the unification of Japan by Emperor Jimmu. According to legend, during the country’s unification, the deity sailed from Kyushu to Osaka Bay, landed in the area where Osaka Castle stands today, and conducted a sacred ritual to protect the spiritual essence of Japan.
