Hofu Tenmangu Gojinko sai (Hadakabo Festival) 2024
The Goshinko-sai Festival (also known as the Hadaka-bo Festival) at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a religious ceremony held to console the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, who was unjustly demoted. The festival takes place annually on the fourth Saturday of November.
The origin of the Goshinko-sai Festival dates back to the first year of the Kanpō era (1004) during the Heian period when Emperor Ichijō dispatched an imperial envoy to Hofu Tenmangu Shrine to console the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane. It was during this envoy that the emperor first declared Michizane’s innocence.
During the Goshinko-sai Festival, approximately 5,000 “Hadaka-bo” (literally, naked monks) dressed in white attire pull a large sacred net, carrying two portable shrines. They travel back and forth to the sacred place of Kachinanoura (Otabisho), associated with Sugawara no Michizane. The festival is filled with energetic shouts of “Brothers, let’s go!” echoing throughout the venue.
The Goshinko-sai Festival has been a tradition at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine for over a millennium.
