Matsushima Autumn leaves When 2024

観瀾亭 (Kanrantei) , located in Miyagi Prefecture, is a historic building with ties to the region’s history. It is said to have originated from a portion of Fushimi Momoyama Castle, granted to Date Masamune by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which was later transferred to Matsushima by the second lord, Date Tadamune. The site once housed around 11 buildings, including quarters for samurai accompanying the lord, a kitchen, and stables, dating back to the end of the Edo period. Among the surviving structures,観瀾亭 is a precious piece of history.

 

Known for its autumn foliage, the site becomes particularly scenic from mid to late October when leaves, such as Irohamomiji, start to change color. The contrast between the stately mansion and the vibrant red maple leaves creates a picturesque setting.観瀾亭 also offers a tranquil space to enjoy matcha (green tea) and other amenities, providing a leisurely experience for visitors.
