Hikone Castle is located in Hikone, Inukami District of Omi Province (present-day Kanegame-cho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture), Japan. During the Edo period, it served as the administrative center of the Hikone Domain. The castle keep, attached turret, and tamon turret are designated National Treasures, while the castle ruins are recognized as a Special Historic Site and are part of the Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park (Special Protection Zone Type I). Hikone Castle is also one of only five castles in Japan whose keeps are designated as National Treasures, alongside Inuyama Castle, Matsumoto Castle, Himeji Castle, and Matsue Castle. It has been selected as one of the Hikone Eight Scenic Views and the Eight Scenic Views of Lake Biwa.
