Akamatsu’s Unique Firework Festival 2024
Overview of the Festival:
Participants dedicate handmade blow-tube fireworks to the shrine, competing to showcase the beauty of the sparks emitted from the blow tubes. This festival has been passed down in the Akamatsu district for a long time. Participants wear the sparks that fall from the blow tubes, raised to a height of about 10 meters, and run around in sync with cheers, praying for a bountiful harvest and household safety in the coming year.
Story Related to the Festival:
A secret manuscript believed to have been written in the Edo period still exists in Akamatsu, containing the necessary materials and weights for blow-tube fireworks. The tubes for holding fireworks are made by hollowing out naturally thick and straight bamboo with a diameter of 10 cm or more. The formulation of gunpowder, the foundation of the fireworks, varies in each district and is kept secret from other districts.
Additional Enjoyment:
Ōhama Beach is designated as a national natural monument, known for its beautiful sandy beach where around 30 loggerhead sea turtles visit annually for egg-laying. In the immediate vicinity of the beach, there is the “Umigame Museum Caretta,” where Hamataro, the world’s oldest loggerhead sea turtle (born in 1950), is kept.
