Ako Gishisai Festival 2024
The Akō Gishi Matsuri, or Akō Rōshi Festival, is an annual event held on December 14th in Akō City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It commemorates the day when the Akō rōnin (masterless samurai) carried out their revenge, known as the Akō Incident, and celebrates their heroic deeds. The festival has been held since 1903 (Meiji 36) and is the largest event in Akō City.
The Akō Gishi Matsuri features parades and performances based on the story of the “Chūshingura” (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), which recounts the tale of the 47 rōnin. Highlights include the “Chūshingura Parade,” which includes processions of daimyo (feudal lords) and rōnin (masterless samurai). Additionally, there is a market showcasing local specialties from towns and cities associated with the Chūshingura story, as well as various events held throughout the city.
The 121st Akō Gishi Matsuri is scheduled to take place on December 14, 2024.
