Animage and Ghibli Exhibition 2024 Iwate Venue
This exhibition focuses on the anime magazine “Animage” (published by Tokuma Shoten) from its inception in 1978 through the 1980s. Over 40 years ago, there was a period when anime experienced significant growth and innovation. The magazine featured groundbreaking works such as “Space Battleship Yamato” and “Mobile Suit Gundam,” which sparked enthusiasm among young anime fans at the time.
“Animage” served as a bridge between the creators and the audience, offering direct insights and words from the creators of these beloved series. This exchange of ideas and perspectives through the magazine contributed to the ongoing success and evolution of Japanese animation today.
The anime magazine “Animage” was pivotal in introducing the talents of many anime creators, including the discovery of the creative duo Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki. Films such as “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” were born from a serialization in “Animage,” and the magazine also supported the creation of Studio Ghibli’s first work, “Castle in the Sky.” This was followed by the notable collaboration of the two directors in “Grave of the Fireflies” and “My Neighbor Totoro.” “Animage” not only promoted their works but also shared their thoughts and words with the readers.
The magazine played a significant role in bringing to life numerous anime works and helping them evolve. The exhibition showcases the impact “Animage” had on the creation and development of anime works through its extensive archival content and valuable production materials. It demonstrates how the creators of “Animage” established Studio Ghibli with a similar spirit, maintaining the same ethos and dedication, which continues to drive the studio’s success today.
