Chikurinji Temple Autumn leaves When 2024
Takurazan Ruriko-ji Temple, located on Gotaisan in Kochi City, is renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage and is recognized as the 31st pilgrimage site of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage. Typically, around mid-November each year, the maple and ginkgo trees begin to display their autumn colors, reaching their peak around early December.
Within the temple grounds, you’ll find a garden considered one of the best in Tosa (the former name of Kochi), the main hall dedicated to Manjushri Bodhisattva, the Daishi Hall dedicated to Kobo Daishi, and a five-story pagoda made entirely of Japanese cypress that stands at an impressive height of 31 meters—all adorned with beautiful autumn foliage. The gradient of the foliage, taking advantage of the elevation changes unique to mountain temples, creates a stunning visual effect.
In 2023, the temple celebrates its 1300th anniversary, and special events will take place during the autumn season (foliage period). For details on special events and admission fees, you can check the official website “Takurazan Ruriko-ji 1300th Anniversary Special Site.”
