Eikando Zenrinji Temple When autumn leaves 2024
Eikando (Eikan-do), located in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, is renowned for its stunning autumn foliage, particularly the captivating scene where the fall colors envelop the Tahoto Pagoda situated on the mountainside within the temple grounds. This enchanting sight is a must-see during the autumn season. Eikando is celebrated in Japanese literature, with the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves) featuring verses praising the “Momiji (maple leaves) of Eikando.”
Approximately 3,000 maple trees adorn the temple grounds, including the pond garden with a scenic layout and the Tahoto Pagoda. The vivid foliage, especially against the rock walls forming a sort of encircling barrier, is referred to as “Iwakaki Momiji” or rock wall maple. The peak viewing period for autumn foliage at Eikando is typically from mid to late November each year.
Notable attractions:
- From November 3rd (Friday) to December 3rd (Sunday), a special exhibition called “Autumn Treasures Exhibition” is held until 5:00 PM (with reception closing at 4:00 PM).
- During this period, from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM (with reception closing at 8:30 PM), the temple grounds are illuminated, offering a mystical and serene experience of the autumn foliage, including the central Hojo Pond. This evening illumination provides a different perspective compared to the daytime, creating a tranquil atmosphere to enjoy the beauty of the fall colors.
