Enryakuji Temple (Mount Hieizan) Sakura When 2024
The cherry blossoms at Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) are typically in full bloom during the Golden Week period, ranging from late April to early May each year. However, the exact timing may vary depending on weather conditions.
Along the approximately 12 km Oku-Hiei Driveway, extending from the Eastern Pagoda, where the Main Hall and Fundamental Central Hall are located, through the Western Pagoda and Yokogawa to Okunomiya at the foot of Mount Hiei, you can find about 40 varieties of double-flowered cherry blossoms. These blossoms create a stunning display.
Notable cherry blossom viewing spots at Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei include:
- Weeping cherry blossoms near the Eastern Pagoda
- Mountain cherry blossoms around the area of the Main Lecture Hall
- Azaleas in the Eastern Pagoda area
- Double-flowered cherry blossoms in the parking lot of the Western Pagoda
- Tall mountain cherry blossoms surrounding the grand Shakado Hall
In the Western Pagoda area, the “Sakura Festival” is held, offering activities such as paid Zen meditation experiences in normally restricted halls and free lottery draws. This festival adds an extra dimension to the cherry blossom viewing experience.
