Fukushima Torch Festival 2025
The “Torch Festival” is one of Japan’s three major fire festivals, with a history of over 430 years. It is held on the second Saturday of November.
It originated more than 430 years ago when the people of Sukagawa Castle gathered with torches in hand to defend against the attack by Date Masamune. Since then, it has been continued to honor the spirits of the fallen warriors.
The giant torches weigh about 3 tons and are 10 meters long. Thirty giant torches, each carried by about 150 young men, parade through the streets and are then erected and lit on Goroyama Mountain. Amid the booming sound of torch drums, the 30 torches are ignited, and the mountainside is engulfed in bright red flames. The torch flames blazing in the late autumn night sky are truly spectacular!
