Gion Matsuri 2025
Gion Matsuri is one of Japan’s three major festivals. It runs for an entire month from July 1st to July 31st, featuring various ceremonies and events. The festival dates back to the Heian period (859–877 AD), when it began as a ritual to appease a plague by sending mikoshi (portable shrines) to Shinzen’en.
The festival’s highlight is the Yamahoko Junko parade, divided into the “Saki Matsuri” (23 floats) on July 17th and the “Ato Matsuri” (11 floats) on July 24th.
