Hakata Gion Yamakasa 2025
Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a Shinto ritual (Gion Festival) dedicated to Kushida Shrine, known as the chief guardian shrine of Hakata (located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City). It is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by Japan.
The festival period, after historical changes, is held annually from July 1 to 15. In the early hours of the final day, participants attend the Kushida Shrine Gion Grand Festival. Following this, groups called “Nagare” offer Yamakasa floats (Kushida entry) and compete on a set route in a parade called “Oiyama.” It is one of the Gion festivals dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto and, along with Hakata Dontaku, represents Hakata’s major festivals.
