Hikone Castle Autumn leaves When 2024
Enjoy Autumn Leaves Reflecting in the Pond at a Famous Garden
Located on the north side of Hikone Castle, Genkyu-en is a daimyo garden with a pond and a circuit-style layout, built in 1677 by the fourth lord of the Ii clan, Naooki Ii. The garden is designed to resemble the detached palace of Emperor Xuanzong from the Tang Dynasty in China and is a renowned garden that preserves the style of the early Edo period.
Featuring structures such as the Rinsuikaku (overhanging pavilion) that extends into a large pond and the Hoshodai, the garden surrounds the pond with carefully chosen elements inspired by the Eight Views of Omi, a scenic concept named after Dongting Lake in ancient China. Trees and rocks are strategically arranged to represent landmarks like Takeshujima and Okinoshira. In autumn, the garden is illuminated, providing a captivating view during the season of vibrant foliage.
Points of Interest:
- Enjoy a tea break at Hoshodai within Genkyu-en for 500 yen (includes matcha and one tea sweet).
- The illumination event is scheduled to take place from November 16 (Saturday) to December 8 (Sunday) in 2024.
