Hofu Tenmangu Goshinkosai (Hadakabo Festival) 2025
The Goshinkosai (Hadakabo Festival) is a traditional ritual held annually on the fourth Saturday of November at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, with a history spanning over a thousand years. It originated in the Heian period when the imperial envoy visited Hofu Tenmangu to console the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, who was wrongfully exiled to Dazaifu. By the late Edo period, ordinary people were allowed to participate if they could prove their innocence, cleansing themselves in cold water and serving in a nearly naked state, hence the name “Hadakabo.” At 6 PM on the festival day, hundreds of Hadakabo shout “Brothers, wasshoi!” as they rush into the shrine precincts, filling the atmosphere with excitement. It is a representative festival of Hofu.
