Hondoji Temple Autumn leaves When 2024
Approximately 1,000 Japanese maple trees adorn the precincts, creating a vibrant display of color. Passing through the main gate and the approach lined with ancient pine and cedar trees, said to be donated by Mito Mitsukuni, visitors are greeted by the vivid red hues of around 1,000 Japanese maple trees within the shrine grounds. The scenic landscape, where structures such as the five-story pagoda, the Niomon Gate, and the corridors complement the autumn foliage, attracts numerous worshippers. The changing colors of the trees usually begin in mid-November, featuring not only the vibrant hues of the Japanese maple but also other varieties such as the Osaka-zuki and the Shuzanko, named after its proximity to the grave of Autumn Mountain, the concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Highlights:
The charm lies in the variety of maple species such as the yama momiji, Osaka-zuki, and Akiyama beni that can be appreciated.
