Hyakumangoku Festival 2024
金沢百万石まつり(Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Matsuri) is an annual festival held in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, typically in June. The festival is organized by the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Matsuri Executive Committee, comprising Kanazawa City and the Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Overview: The festival commemorates the entry of Maeda Toshiie, the founder of the Kaga Domain, into Kanazawa Castle on June 14, 1583. The main event is the Hyakumangoku Gyoretsu, a historical procession reenacting the entry procession with a million koku of rice, symbolizing the wealth of the Kaga Domain. The festival also features various events such as Mino (traditional rainwear) Noh performances, tea ceremonies, and more. The festivities primarily take place over three days, centered around the first Saturday of June (since 2007).
The roots of the festival trace back to the Kanazawa City Festival held in 1923, commemorating events from June 14. It continued until 1945. In the post-war period, under the guidance of GHQ (General Headquarters), the festival was conducted as “Oyama Matsuri” from the following year until 1952.
The current format of the festival began with the “Shokogyoretsu” (Commerce and Industry Festival) organized by Kanazawa City and the Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1952. The festival’s origins are associated with the Hundred Days Festival held during the Edo period, featuring a procession spanning three days. In 1988 and 1989, the festival extended to five days to celebrate the centennial of Kanazawa City’s establishment.
