Imari kunchi 2024
The Imari Kunchi (Imari Tontenton Festival) is an annual event held in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, spanning three days over the weekend following the shrine festival on October 19th each year. Known for its fierce clash between portable shrines (mikoshi) and festival floats (danjiri), it is recognized as one of Japan’s three major “fighting festivals.”
In 2024, the Imari Kunchi is scheduled to take place from October 18th (Friday) to October 20th (Sunday). The festival features intense battles between the mikoshi and danjiri at various locations in the downtown area. On the final evening, the ultimate showdown known as the “Kawaotoshi” (River Drop) takes place at the Imari River Battle Site.
The origin of “Tontenton” comes from the sound of the festival floats beating their elaborate drums rapidly. The quick triple beat is represented by the onomatopoeic expression “Tontenton.”
