Irohazaka Winding Road Autumn leaves When 2024
Nikko, located in Tochigi Prefecture, offers a picturesque mountainous road spanning approximately 16 kilometers that connects Nikko City, Chuzenji Lake, and Okunikko. This mountain road is part of Japan’s selection of top 100 roads. It features the first Irohazaka slope for descending traffic and the second Irohazaka slope for ascending traffic, totaling 48 sharp curves. Even from the comfort of your car, you can enjoy the vibrant autumn foliage along the mountainside.
With an elevation difference of about 440 meters, the view of the descending autumn foliage is particularly splendid. Along the way, at locations such as Kurokami Flat and Akechi Flat, you can also enjoy expansive panoramas that stretch out to the Kanto Plain. Taking a ropeway from Akechi Flat to the observation deck provides a stunning view of Mount Nantai and Lake Chuzenji. The area is also famous for being featured in the anime and manga series Initial D.
Points of Interest: During the peak autumn foliage season from mid-October to early November, the entire area becomes a vibrant canvas of red, yellow, orange, and other vivid colors, providing a delightful experience for those embarking on a scenic drive.
