Ishidori Matsuri 2024
The “Ishitori Matsuri” (also written as “Ishidori Matsuri”) is a festival held at Kuwana Soja (Kasuga Shrine) in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this festival is registered as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage under the category of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, Float Festivals.”
Sometimes spelled as “Ishitori Sai,” this festival is known for its 40 festival floats (yama) that simultaneously play bells and drums, parading from Kasuga Shrine starting at midnight. Due to this spectacle, it is often referred to as the “noisiest festival in Japan” or the “eccentric festival of the world.”
