Jidai Matsuri 2025
The Jidai Matsuri, or “Festival of the Ages,” is one of Kyoto’s three great festivals. Held annually on October 22 at Heian Shrine, it commemorates the founding of the shrine and the relocation of Japan’s capital to Heian-kyō (present-day Kyoto) in 794.
The highlight is a historical procession featuring around 2,000 participants dressed in authentic costumes representing various eras from the Meiji Restoration back to the Heian period. It’s a majestic celebration of Kyoto’s deep cultural heritage.
