Karatsu Kunchi 2024
The Karatsu Kunchi is an annual autumn festival held at Karatsu Shrine in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, from November 2nd to 4th. It is widely recognized as one of the largest events in Karatsu, carrying a deep sense of gratitude for the harvest.
A distinctive feature of the Karatsu Kunchi is the procession of 14 hikiyama (floats) through the city. These hikiyama are elaborately decorated lacquered floats, approximately 7 meters in height and weighing around 2 to 3 tons. Adorned in vibrant colors such as red, blue, and gold, these floats are handcrafted by local artisans and paraded through the town during the festival.
The hikiyama feature various performances, including lion dances and Kabuki, entertaining onlookers. The floats are pulled through the town by local residents, accompanied by energetic chants of “Enya, Enya” and “Yoisai, Yoisai.”
Designated as a tangible cultural property of Saga Prefecture and an important intangible folk cultural property of Japan, the Karatsu Kunchi is also registered as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage under the category of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals.”
