Kashima Gatalympics 2025
The Kashima Gatalympics is a one-of-a-kind event held on the vast tidal flats of the Ariake Sea, which boasts Japan’s largest tidal difference—up to 6 meters! It’s a wild and muddy competition that lets participants get completely dirty in the most fun way possible.
The event started in 1984 with an unusual backstory: when it was announced that neither the Shinkansen nor expressways would reach Kashima, a local young leader, Mr. Kuwabara (who later became mayor), rallied the youth with the idea of, “Let’s create something exciting ourselves!”
This led to the formation of “Forum Kashima,” and the first Gatalympics was held in May 1985. What was once considered an undesirable muddy area was transformed into a source of regional pride.
Now, it’s a major event attracting participants from across Japan and even abroad.
