Kenroku en Best Season 2023 ~ 2024
Kenrokuen (兼六園) is a Japanese garden located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, it covers an area of approximately 11.7 hectares.
The best season to visit depends on personal preferences, as Kenrokuen showcases its beauty throughout the year.
Originating in the mid-17th century as a “daimyo garden” constructed by the Kaga Domain outside Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen is a representative circuit-style garden of the Edo period. Alongside Korakuen in Okayama and Kairakuen in Mito, it is recognized as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens. In the 2009 Michelin Green Guide, Kenrokuen was awarded the highest rating of three stars. The name “Kenrokuen” was given by Matsudaira Sadanobu, who took inspiration from the “six attributes” mentioned in the book “Ryoyo Meienki.” These attributes are grandness, seclusion, human ingenuity, antiquity, abundant water, and scenic views.
Kenrokuen offers various charms each season, and events like the “yukitsuri” (snow hanging) during winter have become iconic. It is renowned for its cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and autumn foliage, making it one of the top spots in Japan for these seasonal attractions. Positioned in the heart of Kanazawa, the garden is surrounded by cultural facilities such as the Seisonkaku Villa, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, forming the “Kenrokuen Cultural Forest.” Connected by a single bridge across the road (Hyakkenbori Street), Kenrokuen is also linked to Kanazawa Castle Park.
Management and regulations for Kenrokuen are defined by the Ishikawa Prefecture Urban Park Ordinance, specifying opening hours, admission fees, and free admission periods in the Ishikawa Prefecture Urban Park Ordinance Enforcement Regulations.
