Kongobuji Temple – Koyasan Autumn leaves when 2024
A sacred site on a mountain with a history dating back to the Heian period: Founded by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi at the beginning of the Heian period, Koyasan is a sacred place in Japanese Buddhism with a history spanning from the Heian era. Referred to as “Issankeidaichi,” Koyasan envisions the entire mountain as a grand temple called Kongobuji, and every part of the mountain is considered part of the temple grounds. The central main hall, known as the Konpon Daito, is located within the mountain, and there are a total of 117 temples scattered throughout, with 51 of them serving as accommodations. In late October to early November each year, the path known as the “Jabaramichi,” leading from Kongobuji to the Danjo Garan, transforms into a tunnel of autumn foliage, creating a breathtaking experience.
Points of Interest: On the Jabaramichi path, from early October (scheduled) to around mid-November, there is also an illumination of the autumn foliage from 17:30, providing visitors with the opportunity to stroll through a tunnel of beautifully lit fall colors.
