Kotohira Shrine Momiji Festival 2024
October 10th is known as “Konpira-san no Hi” (Konpira-san Day).
The “Reidaisai” (Grand Festival) is a special ritual at Konpira Shrine, officially known as Kotohira-gu, and it is the most important festival. Major ceremonies and events, such as the evening shrine festival, regular festival, and the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, are conducted over a period of three days from October 9th to 11th.
Particularly on October 10th, once a year, the deity descends from Mount Kotohira to the town below, known as the day of “Oshitage” or the deity’s descent. The mikoshi procession involves approximately 600 people covering a distance of about 2 kilometers from the main shrine to the temporary shrine (Minamigami-en/Shinjijo). During this procession, the deity’s mikoshi is guided by two boys riding horses, known as “Otokonin-san” (head boys), and two girls in a palanquin. It is believed that pure-hearted children can guide the deity.
Furthermore, on the 10th and the following 11th, the area around the temporary shrine and its vicinity will be lively with various events, stalls, and festivities.
