Kouda Fire Festival 2025
Held on the last Saturday of July, this is a large-scale festival involving the entire island. Designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by Ishikawa Prefecture, it is known as one of Japan’s three major fire festivals due to the enormous approximately 30-meter tall torches.
Mikoshi (portable shrines) and lanterns are carried out from Iyahime Shrine, then paraded seven times around a huge pillar torch set in the plaza. Afterwards, islanders wave handheld pillar torches while circling. At the peak of excitement, the giant torch is lit, sending a towering pillar of fire skyward. The direction in which it falls is used to predict good fishing and harvest.
