Matsuyama Castle Autumn leaves When 2024
The contrast between the castle tower and the autumn leaves is a must-see. Located at the summit of Mt. Katsuyama in the center of Matsuyama City, at an elevation of 132 meters, construction of Matsuyama Castle began in 1602 (Keicho 7) under the direction of Kato Kiyomasa. Structures such as the dry turret (inuiyagura), Nohara turret, and hidden gate have been present since the castle’s foundation. Currently, 21 buildings are designated as important cultural properties. The existing main keep was reconstructed in 1852 (Kaei 5). From its top floor, you can overlook the Seto Inland Sea and Mount Ishizuchi, enjoying breathtaking views. The trees in Matsuyama Castle are mostly evergreen broadleaf trees, with few deciduous trees that change color. However, on Castle Hill, you can witness the beauty of the intermittent autumn leaves blending with the greenery.
Highlights: While there are few deciduous trees inside the castle, the beautiful contrast between the white color of the existing main keep and the evergreen trees is a highlight. The top floor of the main keep offers spectacular panoramic views. Additionally, a red leaf illumination event is scheduled to take place in the Matsuyama Castle Ninomaru Historic Garden at the foot of the mountain from November 18th (Saturday) to 26th (Sunday) in 2023.
