Mikuni Festival 2024
The Mikuni Matsuri is the spring festival of the Mikuni Shrine held in Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture.
Overview:
Together with the Oyama-yama Matsuri in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and the Seihaku Sai in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Mikuni Matsuri is known as one of the Three Great Festivals of Hokuriku. It takes place over three days, starting on May 19th (main festival), followed by events on May 20th (float procession and mid-festival), and concluding on May 21st (post-festival). The highlight is the float procession on the 20th, where 18 floats, out of which 6 (or 7) floats are selected to parade through the town. During the heyday, influenced by the prosperity of Mikuni Minato due to trade with Kitamae ships, the floats competed with each other, featuring warrior dolls and elaborate craftsmanship, some exceeding 10 meters in height. However, in the Meiji era, when electric wires were laid, there were restrictions, and now the height is limited to 4-5 meters. In 2005, Mikuni-cho (now part of Sakai City) designated it as an intangible folk cultural property, and on April 25, 2006, it was designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the prefecture.
Note that the Sakai City Ryusho Museum Annex in the same town displays a float with dolls exceeding 10 meters from the end of the Meiji era.
