Mikuni Fireworks Festival (Mikuni Hanabi Taikai) 2024
The Mikuni Fireworks Festival (Mikuni Hanabi Taikai) is an annual fireworks festival held in early August at Mikuni Sunset Beach in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. It is also known as the “Mikuni Summer Festival Fireworks Festival.”
Overview: This historical fireworks festival has been held since before World War II. It takes place annually on August 11th at Mikuni Seawater Bath “Sunset Beach.” The event features approximately 7,000 fireworks, including up to 2-foot-diameter launched fireworks, elaborate fireworks devices, and star mines. The fireworks are launched by Ina Fireworks Horiuchi Fireworks Store, a fireworks store in Nagano that also handled fireworks for the Nagano Olympics. Around 30 fireworks technicians work on launching the fireworks from Mikuni Port’s breakwater and underwater fireworks boats.
One of the highlights of this festival is the semi-circular “underwater fireworks,” where fireworks technicians directly throw ignited fireworks into the sea from three underwater fireworks boats, creating a semi-circular display along the horizon.
