Nagaoka fire works festival 2024
The Nagaoka Matsuri (Nagaoka Festival) is a festival held in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The highlight of the festival is the massive fireworks display held on the second and third days, which is one of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals.
The festival takes place annually from August 1st to 3rd within Nagaoka City. The event is divided into three main parts: the Peace Festival, daytime events, and the grand fireworks display. Additionally, there are other activities such as lantern floating.
The origin of the festival dates back to the post-World War II era, specifically the Nagaoka air raids on August 1, 1945. The festival was initiated in 1946 as a prayer for the recovery and reconstruction from the war damage. However, the fireworks display in Nagaoka predates the festival and began separately. In 1879, on September 14th and 15th, during the festival of Senju-machi Hachiman-sama, individuals associated with the red-light district, including those from Nagahara, contributed money to launch 350 fireworks.
The festival’s fireworks display evolved into a full-fledged event in 1906, and it officially adopted the name “Nagaoka Matsuri” in 1951.
