Nagara River Fire works festival 2024
The “Zenkokohanabi Taikai” (全国花火大会) was a fireworks festival that was held by the Gifu Shimbun and Gifu Broadcasting from 1946 onwards along the Nagaragawa River. The first edition took place on August 10, 1946, marking the year after the end of World War II. The fireworks, launched with wishes for reconstruction and prosperity in Gifu, provided hope to the citizens who were grappling with the aftermath of the defeat. Initially named the “Zenkokuenka Taikai” (全国煙火大会), it was later changed to “Zenkokohanabi Taikai” from the following year. The festival traditionally took place on the first Saturday of August along the Nagaragawa River in Gifu City. Sometimes, it is collectively referred to as the “Nagaragawa Fireworks Festival” together with the Chunichi Shimbun-sponsored event held the previous week (last Saturday of July).
However, it was canceled for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022 (as mentioned later). Starting from 2023, there were plans to integrate it with the Chunichi Shimbun-sponsored event and hold it as the “Gifu Nagaragawa Fireworks Festival” (tentative name). As a result, the last actual edition took place in 2019.
