Nagasaki Kunchi Festival 2025
The Nagasaki Kunchi is the grand autumn festival of Suwa Shrine, the guardian deity of Nagasaki, held annually over three days from October 7 to 9.
It originated in 1634 (Kan’ei 11), when two courtesans dedicated a Noh dance called “Komai” to Suwa Shrine. The festival has since incorporated many exotic and multicultural elements and was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan in 1979.
The festival is organized by the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Association, aiming to preserve traditional performances and promote tourism and local development.
