Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival 2024
The Naha Tug-of-War Festival is a traditional event held annually in Naha City, typically on the middle day (Sunday) of the 3-day weekend that includes Health and Sports Day in October. With a history dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era, the festival features a unique form of tug-of-war based on Okinawa’s rice cultivation culture.
In 2024, the festival will take place from October 12th (Saturday) to October 14th (Monday, public holiday). The first day kicks off with the “Citizens’ Performing Arts and Folk Traditional Entertainment Parade” on Kokusai Street, and on the 8th (Sunday), events such as the “Tug-of-War Procession (Ufunnasu-nee)” and the “Naha Tug-of-War” are held.
The Naha Tug-of-War Festival is often referred to as one of the “Naha Big Three Festivals,” along with the “Naha Hari” and the “Ryukyu Kingdom Festival (Shurijo Castle Festival).” It attracts approximately 280,000 spectators each year. In 2023, the festival returned to its regular schedule after a hiatus of four years.
