Nanzenji Temple autumn leaves when 2024
The expansive grounds adorned in vibrant autumn colors are a must-see. As the head temple of the Rinzai sect’s Nanzen-ji school, the vast 45,000-tsubo (approximately 148,500 square meters) precinct is transformed into a spectacle of red and gold during the autumn foliage season, featuring around 200 maple trees. The majestic Sanmon gate, counted among Japan’s three great gates, stands with solemnity and is beautifully enhanced by the autumn foliage. From the upper floors, one can enjoy panoramic views of the city and the temple complex.
The Hojo Garden, created by the renowned garden designer Kobori Enshu, is another breathtaking highlight. Typically, the peak time to witness the autumn foliage is from mid-November to early December.
Points of Interest: From the upper floors, the view extends over the adorned precinct with Maples and the entire cityscape bathed in autumn hues.
