Night Drumming The Niihama Taiko Festival (Niihama Taiko Matsuri) is an autumn festival held in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture. It is renowned as one of the Shikoku Sanbutsu Matsuri, along with Tokushima’s Awa Odori and Kochi’s Yosakoi Festival, and is also counted among Japan’s three major lively festivals. The origins of the festival are said to date back to the Heian period.
Held annually for three days from October 16th to 18th (in some areas, starting from October 15th), the festival features the lively procession of 54 large drum floats, known as “taikodai,” adorned with gold-thread embroidery. These floats parade through various districts in Niihama City. The floats are carried by over 200 men, presenting a magnificent and splendid display of extravagance and bravery.
